Meet Melissa Soto, Founder & Teacher

Melissa graduated Cum Laude in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts in Exceptional Student Education for grades K-12 from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico. She began her career teaching English to native Spanish speakers in both low-income and affluent schools, working with students from pre-K through middle school, before accepting a position with the Palm Beach County School District in 2013. From 2013 to 2020, she taught first grade in a dual language program on the Spanish side, where she ran clubs, organized whole-school performances and talent shows, and arrived at a guiding truth that still shapes her teaching today: we're all exceptional.
In 2020, at the start of the pandemic, Melissa founded a homeschool pod called Tropical Classroom. She wasn't an expert in homeschooling or running a pod; she simply knew she needed to create a safer, calmer space for her own children. The pod ran successfully for three years, until her students moved on to middle school. In 2023, Melissa closed its doors and stepped into a corporate role, believing her days with an Expo marker in hand were over. Thankfully, she was wrong.
At the beginning of 2026, a call came in asking her to do what she does best: teach, figuratively and literally. Demand for her approach kept growing, and North Star Learning was born.
We're all exceptional- some of us more than others.
Melissa believes traditional schools often fall short of empowering students to take ownership of their learning, because educators are so often encouraged to teach in a one-size-fits-all way, even though every learner is different. She believes each student deserves to learn in their own way and at their own pace, starting from what they can do rather than what they can't. Confidence and competence come first; academic and social challenges follow. Every day at North Star Learning, Melissa and her students work together to build creative thinking and sharpen critical reasoning skills.
Beyond academics, Melissa teaches her students responsibility, discipline, and a genuine love of learning. Her classroom is built on respect- starting with her. She models the open, honest communication she wants her students to carry with them, believing empathy, compassion, and respect are what truly help students thrive.
